Gold rush The impact of gold mining on poor people in Obuasi in Ghana
In Africa, Ghana is the second largest gold producer, contributing to about % of the country's GDP. The mining sector in Ghana consists of both smallscale and largescale mining, each of which has varying environmental impacts. This paper provides an exposition on the environmental impacts of mining activities in Ghana.
Ghana is on the cusp of a real opportunity for change. Mining is a major contributor to the country's economy. In 2014 alone, 34 per cent of the country's gold production came from the ASM sector. In addition, the government is actively pursuing the recategorisation of its mineral licensing regime, including ASM.
The Konongo Gold Project, located 200km northwest of Accra in Ghana, recommenced mining operations and poured its first gold in June 2011, within three months of obtaining environmental approval. The mine is 70% owned by Signature Metals and 30% by the Government of Ghana.
